Hi, I'm Maura Marcks! I make clothes one piece at a time in my sewing studio in Troy, NY. I use vintage fabric and also repurpose second hand textiles like bedsheets and curtains.
I create pieces that remind me of that perfect 70s or 80s needle in the haystack thrifted shirt, shirts that scream “Dad on Vacation”. I love bright colors, weird patterns, nostalgia prints but most of all I love the feeling I get from giving new life to old materials.
I grew up in Vermont, where I learned to sew with my mom, who is an amazing seamstress! I developed my skills by altering thrifted clothing throughout my youth but started really steadily creating things from scratch after an inspiring visit to a David Bowie exhibit, wanting and knowing I could create fun and loud clothing for myself and others.
My proudest moment on my sewing journey so far is that I made a Hawaiian shirt for Weird Al Yankovic, who wore it on stage in Albany, NY in May of 2022. That spurred one of his super fans to commission a second shirt for him to give to Al on his birthday, which he also wore on stage in Pittsburgh, PA in October of 2022. Al didn’t talk about the shirts but the fact that he performed in them on stage spoke volumes to me. Those moments keep me going! I love to sew shirts!
